The name comes from the elongated dorsal fin that extends like a flag (hata in Japanese), hence the name hatatate-dai (flag-raising snapper).
It looks very similar to the schooling bannerfish, making them notoriously difficult to tell apart.
The bannerfish has 11 dorsal spines, while the schooling bannerfish has 12 — along with several other distinguishing features.
