The scientific name longirostris means "long snout," and the English name "big longnose" also refers to this long snout.
A very similar species is the longnose butterflyfish; the two can be told apart by this fish's longer snout and the small dark spots on its breast.
It is also known for a rare dark color morph in which the whole body turns blackish brown.
