"Blackback" in the English name refers to the black dorsal coloring.
Interestingly, while one might expect the Japanese name to reflect its black back as well, the name Akebono is used instead — Akebono (曙) means "dawn" in Japanese, evoking the soft light that breaks through the sky at daybreak.
The fish's coloration is thought to resemble the gentle light of the dawn.
