The raccoon butterflyfish has a black spot at the base of the tail fin, while the diagonal butterflyfish does not.
Also, the raccoon butterflyfish's body lines fade away near the back, whereas on the diagonal butterflyfish they extend all the way across — this is likely what inspired the name "diagonal."
