The scientific name baronessa means "baroness," and combined with the Japanese name Mikado (Emperor), it carries quite a noble set of names.
It can be distinguished from the triangular butterflyfish by the absence of yellow markings at the base of the tail fin — this species has none.
It feeds primarily on coral polyps, making it challenging to keep in captivity.
