パンダゲンロクダイの写真
Haraguchi's butterflyfish

Japanese name: パンダゲンロクダイ
Scientific name: Roa haraguchiae

Characteristics

This species lives at depths of 40–200 m in the waters of Japan and the Philippines, and was first formally recorded as a new species in 2020.

The scientific name haraguchiae was given as a dedication to Yuriko Haraguchi, a volunteer at the Kagoshima University Museum.

Despite being nicknamed "panda," the fish actually has white and orange stripes. At the depths where it lives, yellow light is absorbed by the water and the orange appears black — so the fish looks black and white, just like a panda, in its natural habitat.
