An endemic species of the Hawaiian Islands and Johnston Atoll.
It is also called the lemon butterflyfish in English, though in Japanese, "lemon butterflyfish" refers to a different species.
It closely resembles the speckled butterflyfish; the two can be told apart by the black patch at the base of the tail, which this species has and the speckled butterflyfish lacks.
