The Japanese name Sudare comes from the fish's curtain-like striped pattern (sudare means a bamboo blind or curtain).
"Double-saddle" in the English name refers to the two saddle-shaped black markings on the body.
Its pattern is similar to that of the saddle butterflyfish.
