Wrought-iron butterflyfish

Japanese name: ユウゼン
Scientific name: Chaetodon daedalma

Characteristics

The wrought-iron butterflyfish is named after yuzen dyeing, a traditional Japanese textile art whose intricate patterns resemble the fish's markings.

It is a species endemic to Japan, found mainly around the Ogasawara Islands, with occasional records from Okinawa.

It can form large schools, which are poetically called yuzen-dama (yuzen balls).
